Pigeon carnage averted
Dedicated fire crews prevented pigeon crees full of expensive racing pigeons being destroyed, when a shed caught fire on a Cramlington allotment at around 10pm last night.
Two fire tenders rushed to the blaze at allotments close to Lanercost Nature Reserve, East Cramlington, and is popular and well-used gardening retreat. Police also attended the scene this morning.
Remarkably pigeon crees only yards away were left unscathed by the fire which left other nearby wooden buildings scorched black.
The allotment site was made famous by local legend Joby Dickson who stabled his horse there. A familiar character that was often seen scything grass on roadside verges or using his horse and trailer to help hard-pressed locals transport belongings when moving house.
Paintings of Joby, painted by local artist Richard Flynn, hang in Concordia Leisure Centre.
